Sentence for Racial Attack Was Just

I am the mother of beating victim James Wilson. After reading the letter “Despite Apology, Man Is Sentenced to 10 Years for Racial Assault” (June 15) by Linda M. Conley, I had to wait several days before I could reply in a calm manner.

My son and his three female friends were invited guests to the home where this racial attack occurred. The vicious assault was triggered by the mere fact that my son is a dark-skinned Afro- and Mexican American who had the nerve to be with his very pregnant Caucasian lady and their Caucasian female friends.

I don’t think any of your readers can realize their terror and a mother’s shock to get a call from the hospital and rush to see her son totally drenched in blood and then sit with him for three hours of pure cutting and stitching of skin.

His fiancee, in addition to suffering a vicious head blow, was rushed to the hospital three times during that weekend with painful contractions.

Besides the partial amputation of the left ear, my son had both ears partially severed from his skull. This required the stitching of the back of his ears to his skull. Also he required stitches in too numerous parts of his head and face to mention.

My son now has permanent partial blindness in one eye and was hospitalized again for surgery to remove beer bottle glass still in his left ear. His ear needed to be opened from behind from top to bottom. As a result of the attack he has lost almost all hearing in that ear and there is no guarantee that he will ever regain his lost hearing.

In closing, Judge Purnell was very just in the sentencing.

P.S. Due to threats to my family, please do not publish my name or city.
