Double-Barreled Victory for Birmingham

Demetrus Patterson, Keisha Mierez and Tiffany Burgess of Birmingham High were double winners, leading the Braves to victory in the boys’ and girls’ track and field championships in the L.A. Watts Summer Games at USC on Saturday.

Patterson, who tied for sixth in the boys’ 100 meters in the state championships June 7, won that event in 11.00 and the 200 in 22.68. The senior-to-be also ran a leg on the Braves’ 400 relay team that placed second in 43.80.

Birmingham totaled 152 points, followed by Fremont with 74 and Dorsey with 58.

The Braves edged Riverside North, 89-88, in the girls’ meet with Gahr third at 32 points.

Mierez, who will be a junior, won the long jump with a career-best of 17-8 and the high jump at 5-2 while competing in that event for the first time.

Burgess, a junior-to-be and the 1996 and ’97 City Section champion in the 1,600, won that event in 5:41.73 and the 800 in 2:26.42.

BOYS’ TENNIS

William Ramos of San Fernando High advanced to the semifinal round with an 8-4 victory over Dennis Mah of Westchester.

Ramos, who posted an 8-5 victory in the round of 16, will play Coachella Valley’s Cesar Mancilla today.

Ramos, along with partner Tony Nguyen, also advanced to the semifinals in doubles by beating Bellflower’s Minh Ho and Jerome Angsuco, 8-8 (7-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

San Fernando’s Gladys Preciado, Eunice Herrera and Lidia Cordero each were eliminated from the singles competition in the round of 16.

Preciado fell, 8-5, while Herrera and Cordero each suffered 8-1 defeats.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Upland 4, Highland 0--Highland was eliminated in the round of 16 as Upland scored three goals in the first five minutes of the match.

Highland 4, Lincoln 0--Megan Stewart scored two goals and Rachelle Globig had three assists for the Bulldogs in a first-round match.

Sarah Wilson and Maggie Ramos had the other goals for Highland.

Corona 4, Hoover 0--Goalkeepers Crystal Morales and Angela Nunez each made five saves for the Tornadoes but Hoover fell in a first-round match when Corona scored three goals in the first half.

Mary Star 7, Birmingham 0--The outmanned Braves trailed, 5-0, at halftime and were eliminated in the round of 16.
