Will’s Writing

George Will draws ever closer to the edge. Aside from casting a long shadow of doubt on his beloved free market (Column Right, June 22), his ceaseless search for arcane words and phrases, intended to convince his readers of his erudition, only evokes visions of a dog-eared thesaurus which enables him to substitute obscure words for clear ideas.

Will would do well to heed the advice of E.B. White, that true lover and most effective user of the English language: “Eschew obfuscation,” unless his purpose is to proclaim, “What a smart boy am I!” What a pity to see an obvious intelligence convert itself into a prosaic windbag.
