Senior citizens in Montebello can swing to their hearts’ content now that construction is complete on a $1.1-million addition to the city’s 67-year-old City Park Senior Citizens Center.

The new 5,000-square-foot dance hall, located next to the existing center at Whittier Boulevard and Taylor Avenue, is scheduled to be dedicated Aug. 22, although it will be open for various activities in the meantime.

Built with a brick facade to match the former library that now attracts more than 300 senior citizens a day, the multipurpose room was paid for with county and federal grants, and includes a kitchen and restrooms.

Assistant city administrator Mario Guerra said the center’s older wing may soon be upgraded as part of a second construction phase. Project designers decided to leave that part for last, he said, after hearing from senior citizens who visit the center.

“They wanted to be able to have large, sit-down dinner or lunch functions that include dancing,” Guerra said.
