Hurrah for Adam’s Song

I was very surprised to read Kathleen Craughwell’s article “The Film Musical That Snuck Up on Gen-X” (July 28) and find no mention of Adam Sandler. Craughwell writes about the musical scenes in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” as if they were something new. A trip to the video store to rent “Billy Madison” is all that is needed to show that Sandler was doing this kind of work in films three years ago.

But it’s not just the musical sequence in “Billy” that should have merited Sandler’s mention. There is also the hugely popular “Happy Gilmore,” which contains three scenes that involve characters breaking into song.

As for Craughwell’s wish for studios to give us more of this type of movie, she doesn’t have long to wait. Sandler’s newest movie is a romantic comedy co-starring Drew Barrymore in which he plays a singer in a small-town wedding band. So maybe it’s time for film writers to come down from their ivory towers and realize what we normal moviegoers have known for a while: Adam Sandler is not silly or juvenile, he is very funny and very original.
