Hurt Thumb Sidelines Pirates’ Young

Pittsburgh first baseman Kevin Young will miss at least a month and possibly the rest of the season because of an injured thumb. Young was injured as he dove into first base late in Saturday’s game against Colorado. He played the final two innings without realizing the seriousness of the injury.

Young reacted angrily to the news, grabbing a bat and pounding an equipment trunk in the clubhouse. Young was batting .315 with 16 homers and 68 runs batted in.

Pete Harnisch, who started on opening day for the New York Mets and has not pitched for them since then because of depression, is tentatively scheduled to return to the rotation Tuesday night. Met Manager Bobby Valentine said the decision on whether Harnisch will start against the St. Louis Cardinals won’t be made until today.

The Florida Marlins sent right-handed pitcher Kurt Miller (elbow surgery) to triple-A Charlotte for rehabilitation. In addition, right-handed pitcher Matt Mantei (rotator cuff surgery) was sent to Class A Brevard County (Fla.) . . . Cincinnati called up Giovanni Carrara from triple-A Indianapolis. Carrara will start against the Giants today in place of Pete Schourek, who had a cortisone shot Sunday in his sore left elbow. Red reliever Mike Remlinger will start against San Diego on Tuesday in place of Dave Burba, who is still bothered because of a stiff back. . . . St. Louis rookie right-hander Manny Aybar will make his major league debut tonight at New York. Aybar is a non-drafted free agent who began his professional career as a shortstop. Aybar will be recalled from triple-A Louisville today.
