Federal Budget Agreement

Why does it appear that we have only one political party: the Big Government Republican-Democratic Party? The Republicans and President Clinton are celebrating not because they have saved the public any taxes or cut out any government, because they have not. Instead, they are celebrating because they think they have pulled the wool over our eyes once again.

The new budget agreement is like a family paying off the mortgage (the deficit), while taking an expensive vacation (tax cuts for the wealthy), with little regard for the education of their elementary-school kids.

Do you like increased government spending, a more complex tax code and new federal entitlement programs? If so, then you will love the new budget agreement.

The tax cuts in this deal are too small, too narrowly targeted and too wrapped up in complex tax credits and tax incentives. We don’t need to make our complicated tax code system even more complicated in order to provide tax relief. Every American deserves tax cuts, not just ones who have children, are going to college or make a lot in capital gains.

A better solution is to simply cut taxes across the board.

While the $500-per-child tax credit may be politically popular, it is ill-advised, costly, discriminatory and simply sends the wrong message. In our already overcrowded and polluted country, it makes absolutely no sense to reward reproduction through tax cuts. Child tax credits should be reserved only for those who adopt children.

Overpopulation is a major driving force behind many serious environmental and social problems, yet it is largely ignored by our shortsighted, selfish and baby-obsessed society.
