Council Will Consider Shopping Center Sign

The City Council today will consider whether to allow a 95-foot-tall sign near the Riverside Freeway advertising a new shopping center at Savi Ranch.

City planning commissioners recently rejected the sign plan, prompting an appeal to the council by the developer of the shopping center.

The developer proposed placing the sign near the Weir Canyon Road freeway offramp, close to where the mall recently opened. The sign, mounted on two corrugated steel columns, would have flashing neon and illustrations of oranges, hills and a river.

In rejecting the sign, planning commissioners called it “overpowering” and “a waste of money.” They said it would not give motorists, particularly those traveling in the left lanes, sufficient notice to exit the freeway.

The developer, Majestic Realty, contended the commission misunderstood the purpose of the sign. Company officials said the sign is designed to be a constant reminder to commuters of the new center.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4845 Casa Loma Ave. Information: (714) 961-7100.
