City May Join Federal Electric Car Program

The City Council today will consider participating in the federal Clean Cities program, in which the city would lease two electric cars and build three charging stations for the vehicles.

In 1995, the city joined the program’s Electric Vehicle Project Team in Orange County in applying for a grant to develop electric car charging stations. The team, comprising 11 public agencies and 10 businesses, has been awarded $420,000 from the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Orange County Transportation Authority to fund a countywide program.

In Fullerton, the cost to build the three stations and lease the two cars would be $97,000. The city proposes contributing $61,000, with the rest coming from the grant.

If the City Council approves spending the money, charging stations would be built at the north platform of the Fullerton train depot, the parking lot behind the police station and the parking lot at the Costco store.

The council meeting will be held at City Hall, 303 W. Commonwealth Ave., at 4 p.m.
