City Might Apply for Grant to Battle Drugs
To help eliminate drug-related crimes and other problems in a west Anaheim neighborhood, the City Council today will consider applying for a $250,000 federal grant.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced the availability of grant money under the Safe Neighborhood program, which targets neighborhoods with crime problems.
The Anaheim neighborhood, bounded by Lincoln, Knott, Orange and Western avenues, includes two housing projects, the Glen Forest and Westchester complexes, both of which receive federal housing assistance.
If the city wins the grant, it could use the money to increase police and security services.
Council members also will consider approving an agreement with the Orange County Transportation Authority to provide free transportation to senior citizens participating in lunch programs at Brookhurst Community Center and La Colonia and Placentia seniors centers. The transportation agreement would cost the city $30,800 during the 1997-98 fiscal year.
