A man who was shot multiple times by Oxnard police over the weekend had his condition upgraded to serious, hospital officials said.

Daniel J. Bravo, 42, of Oxnard, was shot about 5:30 a.m. Sunday in front of his estranged wife’s house in Oxnard, police said. He was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was initially listed in critical condition.

Police were called to the house in the 1200 block of Birch Street because a domestic dispute was allegedly taking place.

Bravo, armed with an 8-inch kitchen knife, was standing in the walkway of the home as officers arrived, police said. He refused to drop the knife and failed to respond when police used pepper spray on him. When Bravo lunged at an officer, police shot him, officials said.

No one else was injured in the shooting. An investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
