Four Cal Lutheran University students each have been awarded $1,000 scholarships for their outstanding academic and community service records.

Incoming seniors Brad Bjelke of Santa Clarita and Juan Santos of Bakersfield, as well as incoming freshmen Nina Puente of Newbury Park and Jordana Segal of Simi Valley will receive their awards at a dinner next month staged by the Community Leaders Club, which sponsors the contest.

“The students who are selected for their scholarships have manifested in their young lives a service to their community, church or school that goes beyond what most students and even adults achieve,” said Carol Keochekian, Cal Lutheran’s university relations director.

Bjelke is a student senator, treasurer of the Cal Lutheran alumni association and has worked on the school’s literary magazine.

Santos is treasurer of the African-American Student Union and volunteers for the NAACP, Glenwood Elementary School in Thousand Oaks, the Kern County Special Olympics and Cal Lutheran’s Upward Bound summer school program.
