Bell Gardens police shot and killed a 23-year-old man after he refused to raise his hands when ordered by officers who were serving a search warrant, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Monday.

Alfieri Shinaia died at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood shortly after the shooting Sunday at his home in the 6500 block of Fry Street in Bell Gardens, a county coroner’s spokesman said.

Fatal shooting: A headline in a news brief Tuesday incorrectly stated that a man had been shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy serving a warrant. The fatal shot was fired by a Bell Gardens police officer.

Police went to Shinaia’s home about 5 a.m., said Deputy Carrie Stuart, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the shooting. An officer saw Shinaia in the yard and instructed him to raise his hands, Stuart said, adding that the suspect refused to do so.

“The officer again instructed the suspect, who had been arrested for weapons possession charges within the last several months, to raise his hands, which he still refused to do,” Stuart said.

The officer, whose name was not released, fired several shots, hitting Shinaia in the upper body, Stuart said.
