LAX Gets Grant to Develop Transit Improvements

Los Angeles International Airport on Monday received a $300,000 federal grant to help it develop a system to electronically monitor the flow of traffic in and out of the airport.

The grant is earmarked for an advanced transportation technology known as Intelligent Transportation System.

Currently, all shuttle buses operated by the airport, hotels and rental car companies contain a black box installed for automated vehicle identification. The devices allow airport employees to monitor the location of each bus.

The airport is seeking to develop a system in which passengers could walk off their planes and use an interactive television monitor to summon a shuttle bus from a rental car company, hotel or the airport. The vehicles currently circulate on a fixed schedule. Shuttle bus traffic would be drastically reduced during off-peak hours and managed better during peak hours.

U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Rolling Hills) were on hand for the presentation.

“LAX serves 58 million passengers a year, 70% of them domestic, and that number is expected to grow,” Boxer said. “With very little room for new highway lanes to improve airport access, we have to do better with what we have.”
