Edmonds Reluctantly Goes on the DL

Jim Edmonds says he hardly can get out of bed in the morning, so the Angels placed him on the 15-day disabled list Monday and activated designated hitter Eddie Murray.

Edmonds, who underwent an MRI exam Monday, strained his lower right rib cage Thursday making a throw to the plate against Chicago and admits he “still has a lot of spasms.” But he apparently isn’t overjoyed with the roster move.

“I know I’m on the DL, that’s all I know,” Edmonds said. “That’s the option they took.”

The move is retroactive to Aug. 1 and the Angels have two off days coming up, so Edmonds--who is hitting .296 with 18 homers, 66 runs and 60 runs batted in--could miss as few as 10 more games.

“One of his knees was bothering him and swelling up and they’re both hurting, so there’s the added advantage of letting him rest his knees,” Manager Terry Collins said. “If it was up to him, he’d be back in four days, but these kinds of injuries can be nagging, so this protects us. We want to have him as close to 100% for the last month and a half as possible.”

Left-fielder Garret Anderson will move over to center and Tony Phillips will play left. Murray, who has been on the disabled list since June 19 because of tendinitis in his right wrist, will “get a few at-bats,” according to Collins.

Mark Langston threw fastballs and change-ups for 15 minutes and was encouraged with the way his arm responded.

“It feels good,” said Langston, who suffered stiffness after a rehabilitation start Wednesday at High Desert. “I’m pleased. This is a good building block.”

Langston, who had elbow surgery May 27, had hoped to return Aug. 9 but clearly won’t be back that soon. He talked with team medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum, who told him the setback was not unusual.

“He told me this procedure wasn’t a simple tuneup like the other times,” Langston said. “So timetables are out the door as far as I’m concerned. It’s a day-to-day deal now.”

Negotiations with first-round draft pick Troy Glaus have reached a standstill, according to sources, and it appears the Angels won’t sign the former UCLA shortstop until September, at the earliest. Glaus began attending summer-school classes at UCLA on Monday. . . . The Angels’ Aug. 23 game against Boston at Anaheim Stadium has been moved from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally by Fox.

He gave up seven hits, four walks and eight runs in 1 2/3 innings against Chicago but escaped a decision when the Angels overcame a club-record nine-run deficit before losing, 14-12. Florie, a 27-year-old right-hander, has appeared in 26 games for the Brewers but is making only his fourth start. Opponents are batting .277 against him. Milwaukee’s team earned-run average since the All-Star break (3.21) is the second-best in baseball. The Angels’ 3.97 is fourth-best.
