Larger Union Criticizes Port Pilots Strike

The union representing the largest number of employees in Los Angeles city government has waded into the 4-week-old strike at the nation’s second-busiest port, saying that the harbor’s pilots should not be privatized and that the strikers’ requests are greedy.

“Local 347 can no longer stand by as another union attempts to advance the interests of a small group of workers while disrespecting the work and interest of another,” Julie Butcher, general manager of the Service Employees International Union local, wrote in a letter to the City Council’s Labor Relations Committee.

Butcher’s union represents the boat operators and deck hands who work with the pilots.
