2 Fires Along Golden State Freeway Doused
Two fires that charred 120 acres of dry brush along the Golden State Freeway were brought under control Wednesday.
The first fire was reported about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the hilly terrain near Gorman, said Capt. Steve Valenzuela of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was believed to have been caused by discarded material, possibly a lighted cigarette, Valenzuela said.
The flames charred about 100 acres of dry brush before firefighters fully controlled the blaze just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
California 138, which connects the Golden State and Antelope Valley freeways, was closed for a few hours during the night but was reopened by Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A second fire was reported about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday just north of Lake Hughes Road near Castaic, authorities said. It burned about 20 acres before firefighters controlled it in about an hour.
The cause of the second fire had not been determined.
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened in either incident, Valenzuela said.
