UPS Strike Brings Rush to Post Offices

Post offices across Ventura County have seen steep increases in Express and Priority Mail in the wake of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters strike of United Parcel Service.

In the Van Nuys district, which runs from Burbank across Ventura County to San Luis Obispo, U.S. Postal Service workers have seen 20% to 30% increases in Express Mail Next Day Service and two- to three-day Priority Mail, spokesman David Mazer said Wednesday.

Officials say there have been no delays in sorting or delivering mail anywhere in Southern California’s four postal districts--Los Angeles, Van Nuys, Santa Ana and Long Beach.

The postal service’s ability to handle the added volume is largely due to the fact that August is typically a slow time of year, Mazer said.

“With the kind of volume we have now, it’s like Christmas in August,” he said.

Officials have managed to offset congestion at post office walk-up windows by accepting only four Priority Mail parcels of 11 ounces or more per customer.

However, businesses and individuals can exceed that limit by making appointments at postal service sorting centers in Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Santa Clarita, Mazer said.
