Six Area Players in World Games

Several men’s volleyball players with ties to the region will represent the United States at the World University Games from Aug. 18-31 in Italy.

Selected players include: UCLA’s Tom Stillwell (Notre Dame High), UC Santa Barbara’s Donny Harris (La Canada High) and Hawaii’s Curt Vaughan (Ventura High) and Jason Ring (Pierce College).

George Roumain and Chris Jacobson of Pepperdine were also selected to the team.

TENNIS

Erin Boisclair of Agoura Hills advanced in singles and doubles at the USTA 18 girls’ national championships at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose on Wednesday.

Boisclair defeated Janet Bergman of Hilton Head, S.C., 6-4, 6-2, in a fourth-round match.

Boisclair and Jessica Lehnhoff of Cooper City, Fla., defeated Lindsay Blau of El Cajon and Jonni Seyour of Bakersfield, 6-2, 6-2, in a third-round match.

SOFTBALL

The Southern California Stealth under-14 club team won its second pool play game on Wednesday at the 74-team ASA national championships in Rockford, Ill.

The Stealth downed the Arizona Alleycats, 1-0. Kaitlin Reiss singled home Katie Reifman from second in the sixth inning and pitcher Lindsey Kontra earned the victory.

The Stealth plays the Parker (Tenn.) Eagles today.

MARTIAL ARTS

Christopher Pietras of Harvard-Westlake High recently earned a black belt in jujitsu, becoming the ninth student in school history to achieve that status.

Pietras trained under the guidance of Harvard-Westlake martial arts Coach Stephen Copping, a former jujitsu world champion who participated in martial arts demonstrations in the 1996 Olympic Games.

BASEBALL

The Westlake Senators’ 14-and-under baseball team won its first two games in the AAU national tournament Tuesday in Cocoa Beach, Fla., beating the North Carolina Spinners, 7-1, and shutting out the Texas Tornadoes, 5-0.

The 66-team tournament runs through Saturday.

BOXING

Mia St. John of Woodland Hills knocked out Dawn Wimer of Cleveland 1:37 into the first round Tuesday night at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.

St. John (4-0) has knocked out each of her opponents.
