When P.J. Goossen was 18-0 he couldn’t get a bout with a big-name boxer.

Now that he’s lost a fight, his chances for a big-money bout may actually have improved.

Pat Goossen, P.J.’s father and manager, said he has opened negotiations for his son to meet Roberto Duran in a middleweight bout Oct. 3 in Toronto.

“We have to throw our hat in the ring here sometime,” Pat Goossen said. “This seems like as good an opportunity as any.”

Goossen was unbeaten as a junior middleweight until his last fight on July 5, when he dropped a 10-round split decision to Eddie Hall in Moline, Ill.

“That wasn’t one of P.J.’s most stellar performances, and it was still a split decision,” Pat Goossen said. “If he beats Duran, I’m sure that will open up some more doors.”
