Vigilante update--Upon the conclusion of this weekend series with Grays Harbor, the Vigilantes--which began Thursday tied for second in the South Division--will play their longest homestand (nine games). Club officials are talking with Tony DeMarco, agent for former Dodger and Angel left-hander Fernando Valenzuela. DeMarco is still trying to interest other major league teams in Valenzuela, who was released by St. Louis in July. The Vigilantes should know by the next homestand if Valenzuela can or will join them. The Gulls have given Mission Viejo a bad time this season, winning seven of the previous nine games. Kirt Kishita is third among Western Baseball League relievers in saves (9).

Gull update--Grays Harbor was struggling at 5-8, and in last place in the North Division when the Gulls rolled into Mission Viejo. But winning two of the three games sparked the Gulls to a 5-1 trip, and they have won six of the last seven (entering Thursday’s game) to climb over the .500 mark and into second place. First baseman Mike Redina ended a 20-game homerless drought, dating to July 12, by going deep against Salinas on Wednesday. He now has 18, tied for second in the league. Two of the Gulls’ hottest hitters are outfielder David Sanchez--the WBL’s player of the week last week--who has a 13-game hitting streak, and outfielder Al Mealing, who has a 12-game streak.
