Galaxy update--Defenders Robin Fraser and Greg Vanney played all 90 minutes for the U.S. national team in its 1-0 loss to Ecuador at Baltimore Thursday night. On the other hand, striker Eduardo Hurtado was not used at all by Ecuador and should be rested. Cobi Jones bruised his left hip in a collision with Columbus goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the 2-1 loss to the Crew at the Rose Bowl last Sunday and will miss the game. The team called up forward Jose Vasquez from the A-League’s Orange County Zodiac and will convert him into a defender. Vasquez played 14 games for the Galaxy last season before breaking his left foot. The Galaxy claimed 6-foot-3, 185-pound defender Eric Hendrickson on waivers from the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. Hendrickson is captain of the St. Vincent and Grenadines national team.

D.C. United update--Washington will be seeking to avenge a 3-1 defeat by the Galaxy in an ill-tempered game July 12 during which three players were red-carded: Los Angeles’ Danny Pena and Washington’s Marco Etcheverry and Ben Iroha. Etcheverry since has threatened to return to his native Bolivia unless MLS refereeing improves and has been joined in that stance by Switzerland’s Alain Sutter of the Dallas Burn. None of D.C. United’s U.S. national team players--John Harkes, Eddie Pope, Jeff Agoos and Tony Sanneh--was called up for the USA-Ecuador game and all will be fresh. The defending MLS champion has the best record in the league and has scored the most goals, 50. Salvadoran striker Raul Diaz Arce leads the league in scoring with 14 goals and five assists. Bolivian forward Jaime Moreno is third with 12 goals and five assists. Washington is coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to the Colorado Rapids last Saturday.
