A Newport Beach man who stopped to help a stranded motorist at the junction of the Santa Ana and Orange freeways was critically injured early Saturday when a Chevrolet truck swerved into the woman’s parked car, the California Highway Patrol said.

Thomas Patrick Lee Selig, 34, was adjusting a jack under the woman’s car about 1 a.m. when the truck hit, CHP Sgt. Mike Fassnach said. The car, which had a flat tire, was on the shoulder of the freeway connector from the Orange Freeway to the southbound Santa Ana Freeway.

CHP officers used their own jacks to lift the car off the injured good Samaritan, who was taken by paramedics to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Fassnach said. A hospital official declined to comment on his condition Saturday evening.
