Gamble Throws Complete Game as the O.C. Stars Win, 7-1

Matt Gamble of University High pitched a complete game as the Orange County Stars defeated the Dallas Braves, 7-1, in a second-round game at the AABC Mickey Mantle World Series Saturday in McKinney, Texas.

The Stars, a team of 15- and 16-year-olds based in Anaheim, will meet the winner of the game between Tennessee’s AFPC and the tournament-host McKinney Mavericks today in the third round. The championship game in the double-elimination tournament is set for Monday.

Gamble struck out four and walked one, Tony Cappuccilli (Edison) was two for four with three runs batted in, and Bryce Popoff (Edison) drove in two runs and scored another for the Stars.

Eight regions within the United States, as well as Puerto Rico, are represented. The Stars’ region includes California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Arizona and Hawaii.

The Orange County Dodgers opened play at the AABC Connie Mack World Series with a 14-2 victory over the Midland Redskins from Cincinnati Saturday in Farmington, N.M.

Jeff Leuenberger, who played at Canyon, Tommy Nicholson of Esperanza and Bud Smith of Bellflower St. John Bosco homered for the Dodgers, who will meet tournament host Farmington Crows in the second round of the double-elimination tournament on Monday.
