Gwynn Hospitalized for Kidney Stone

Tony Gwynn suffers severe pains caused by a kidney stone and did not play for the San Diego Padres against the Cubs on Saturday in Chicago.

Gwynn, the seven-time batting champion, was sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was expected to stay overnight.

Gwynn was at Wrigley Field when he experienced the pain. He went to the hospital between the seventh and eighth innings. His status is day to day.

The Padres won, 7-5.

Gwynn is second in the major leagues with a .383 batting average. The 37-year-old outfielder is having one of his best seasons, with 16 home runs and 96 runs batted in.

The National League batting champion has hit at least .300 every year since 1983. Only Honus Wagner with eight has won more NL batting titles.

Gwynn signed a contract earlier this season that will pay him $4 million this season and $4.3 million a year during the next two. He has spent his entire 16-year career with the Padres.
