All Parents Want Is Some Idea of What Is in a Show

Dick Wolf arrogates to himself the mantle of “rational thinking” and raises false issues while ignoring the real ones, notably the descent of onetime cherished standards by the network television industry, which aroused not just politicians but parents (“TV Ratings for Content or for Control?,” Counterpunch, Aug. 4).

The goals that Wolf terms “abstract”--in which parents and the medical profession endorsed content labeling--are precisely the opposite. All that parents want is some indication of what is in the programs they are invited to watch.

Wolf is a gifted producer and a charismatic speaker, but he also is a clever apologist for a system that needs correction. Since it cannot correct itself, the people have spoken through recognized institutions such as the PTA, and the Congress has heard the voice of the people.
