When ancient Egyptians made mummies, they took all the internal organs out of the body except the heart, which they believed was the seat of intelligence. Later, people came to see the heart as a symbol of love. But doctors know of the heart as a tireless worker that beats more than 2 1/2 billion times without resting in the average lifetime.
