Celebrity Stamps

It is mistaken to criticize the Postal Service for issuing the Bogart, Elvis, Bugs Bunny, or for that matter any of the many beautiful commemorative stamps that have been appearing recently (letters, Aug. 7). They are beautifully printed, wonderfully varied and exciting to look at.

The criticism suggests that these stamps are a waste of the public’s money, and this is not true. The 32-cent stamp pays for the delivery of a letter. Any stamp that is “collected,” i.e., unused, is almost pure profit for the post office. These commemoratives are issued so that collectors will buy them to save, not necessarily to use.
