Baton Twirler Aims at International Title

Liane Aramaki found a parking lot at Cal State Northridge just right for practicing her baton routines in preparation for an international twirling competition in Hawaii this week4.

Aramaki, 25, a Northridge resident and USC graduate, began twirling the baton at age 5.

She said she has won more than 100 contests at the regional, state and national levels. Aramaki’s mother, Nancy, serves as her coach.

Among the accomplishments Aramaki lists on her six-page resume: 1996 Grand National Solo Champion, a title she said she won in a contest sponsored by the United States Twirling Assn.

Aramaki said she has twirled the baton at numerous events over the years. She’s twirled at the Rose Parade in Pasadena and at college football and basketball games.

In addition, Aramaki said, she’s performed at high school and city youth group activities.

She says she also has served as a dance team instructor.
