Compost Workshop Scheduled Saturday

With summer yard waste mounting, city officials recommend that San Fernando Valley residents learn how to compost at a workshop Saturday at the Studio City Recreation Center.

Experts from the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation will show participants how to turn yard trimmings, leaves, grass, fruits and vegetables into nutrient-rich soil. Mulching, worm composting and other topics also will be covered.

“This way, instead of everything ending up in the landfill, you put it into the earth,” said Enrique Teves, a city spokesman. “It’s a form of recycling. Instead of generating waste, you’re giving back to Mother Nature. It also saves people a lot of money, because they don’t have to go out and buy expensive soil.”

The Studio City park is at 12621 Rye St. The workshop is free and is scheduled to run from 10 to 11 a.m. Other upcoming composting workshops, also from 10 to 11 a.m., are scheduled as follows:

* Aug. 30, Northridge Recreation Center, 10058 Reseda Blvd.

* Dec. 6, Sepulveda Garden Center in Encino, 11633 Magnolia Blvd.

* Dec. 13, Sunland Recreation Center, 8651 Foothill Blvd.

Bins will not be sold at workshops, but may be purchased on the second Friday and fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city’s Griffith Park Composting Facility. Anyone interested in more information, may call 1-800-773-CITY.
