Air-bag maker Safety Components International Inc. has moved its corporate headquarters and 15 corporate employees from Costa Mesa to New York.

The move was triggered by the company’s recent purchase of an air-bag fabric maker in South Carolina.

“Most of our legal and financial consultants are on the East Coast,” said Jeffrey Kaplan, the company’s executive vice president and chief financial officer. “And now, with the South Carolina acquisition, we have facilities on both coasts and in Europe. This puts us closer to the financial centers and equidistant to our factories and markets.”

It probably helps that most of the company’s top officers including Chairman Kaplan and Robert Zummo are from New York as well.

Chief Operating Officer Tom Cresante remains in Costa Mesa, where the company maintains a large auto parts manufacturing subsidiary.
