As Hermosa Beach gears up for Saturday’s official opening of Pier Plaza on lower Pier Avenue, city officials are moving forward with the second phase of the downtown improvement project: a multilevel parking structure.

The City Council recently unveiled the architectural design for a three-story facility that is scheduled for construction at the end of the year. The planned multilevel parking structure has been designed to replace the parking lot between 13th and 14th streets.

The $4.1-million structure, paid for by the city, county and a nearby luxury hotel that is under construction, will accommodate about 400 cars. Hotel guests will use about 100 spaces on the ground floor.

The parking structure will stand 25 1/2 feet above ground and will be located 36 feet from Hermosa Avenue so that a lawn can be planted in front of the structure, said Councilwoman Julie Oakes. Seashell and tile fixtures will line the walls in the pedestrian walkways and a glass elevator will be installed.

“In terms of parking structures, it’s the nicest-looking parking structure one could have,” Oakes said.
