A team of eight Budweiser Clydesdale horses were paraded down Main Street on Thursday afternoon, much to the delight of merchants and beach goers.

The horses are being stabled at a vacant lot at the northwest corner of Orange Avenue and Main Street through Sunday and were taken for a walk about 2 p.m. The city’s Community Services Department issued a parade permit for the walk.

Handlers will again walk the giant animals at 9 a.m. Saturday down Orange Avenue.

“Basically, we were given the opportunity to hitch here, and basically we wanted to do something to promote the merchants and businesses up and down Main Street,” said Jean Libunao of Straub Distributing, which is caring for the animals on behalf of the beer company.

About 1,000 visitors a day are visiting the horses, which stand 6 feet at the shoulders and weigh about a ton each.

Visitors are welcome to greet the horses and take pictures.
