McCutcheon Will Stay on Defense

USC’s plan to use cornerback Daylon McCutcheon on offense occasionally has been shelved.

“Being a great corner is really hard,” Coach John Robinson said. “Being a great anything is really hard. I don’t want him to get out of focus.”

McCutcheon still will return kickoffs, but he won’t be used as an occasional slotback, as was the plan in the spring.

“If we lost someone to injuries, maybe,” Robinson said, adding that receivers such as R. Jay Soward or freshman Rod Perry, the son of the former Ram of the same name, could fill the role instead.

Cornerback Ken Haslip has returned to the team after missing spring practice because he was academically ineligible. Haslip, probably the third cornerback behind McCutcheon and Brian Kelly, regained his eligibility by going to summer school at Pasadena City College. . . . Two-time All-American running back and former Heisman Trophy winner Charles White, who led the NFL in rushing in 1987 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams, will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
