Victory Is the First for Cloude

Ken Cloude won his first major league game and Alex Rodriguez had two doubles and a home run as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 8-3, Friday to earn a split of a doubleheader.

A partial power outage at Camden Yards forced the postponement of Thursday’s game, forcing the teams to play a day-night doubleheader.

In the opening game, the Orioles used two home runs to defeat Randy Johnson and the Mariners, 4-3.

Jeff Reboulet hit a solo home run and Jeffrey Hammonds had a two-run shot for the Orioles, who became the first team to defeat Johnson (16-4) twice this season. Johnson is 3-7 against Baltimore, including 0-2 with a 5.68 earned-run average this year.

Johnson struck out 13 to tie the major league record for strikeouts in consecutive games (32), a mark set by Luis Tiant in 1968 and matched by Nolan Ryan in 1974 and Dwight Gooden in 1984.

Johnson pitched a four-hitter in his fifth complete game, but his wild throw on a sacrifice bunt led to an eighth-inning run that ultimately proved to be the difference.

“It was a hesitation, I guess,” he said. “It was a mistake on my part. I made about three of them today.”

Scott Kamieniecki (8-5) gave up one run on five hits and three walks in seven innings. He matched his season high with seven strikeouts.

The Mariners bounced back in the nightcap, getting home runs from Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner to win for the only the second time in six games. Rodriguez went three for four and scored three runs.

Cloude gave up two runs and two hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two in his second major league appearance.
