A 37-year-old transient man was in critical condition Saturday after he attempted suicide by sitting in front of an oncoming train near Roscoe Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue, authorities said.

Victor Ramos suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, said Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

No charges are expected to be filed against the train engineer, whom police declined to identify.

Ramos was lying on his back between the rails at 11:35 p.m. Friday and apparently sat up as the train approached, Collis said. Ramos was struck when the engineer was unable to stop the train in time.

The train stopped near Woodley Avenue and Raymer Street, about half a mile from where Ramos was hit, said Sgt. Robert Davis of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division.

Firefighters freed Ramos from beneath a rail car, Collis said.
