Nutwood Footbridge Could Be Demolished

City Council members today will consider asking Caltrans to demolish the 29-year-old Nutwood Avenue bridge that connects Cal State Fullerton and Pacific Christian College.

Caltrans has studied all the city’s overpasses and concluded that the Nutwood pedestrian bridge could collapse during a major earthquake and must be either retrofitted or demolished.

City officials said the bridge was built to convey pedestrians from Cal State Fullerton to commercial buildings on the other side of Nutwood.

Since then, traffic signals have been installed at Titan Drive and Commonwealth Avenue, and few people use the bridge.

Both Cal State Fullerton and Pacific Christian College favor demolishing the bridge rather than retrofitting it, officials said.

In other council business today, officials will consider forming a school safety committee and posting a 40-mph limit on Palm Street.

The committee would meet twice a year to discuss issues affecting the safety of students going to and from schools all over the city.

The posted speed limit on Palm in Brea is now 35 mph, but that city is considering increasing the limit to 40 mph. In Fullerton, there is no posted speed limit.
