City Officials May Sell Savage Canyon Landfill

City officials are considering selling the Savage Canyon Landfill because its small size makes it expensive to operate. While Savage Canyon can accept up to 350 tons of trash a day, the nearby regional Puente Hills Landfill averages 12,000 tons per day.

Confidential negotiations between Whittier and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District have upset some residents, but city officials say public hearings will be held before any sale.

“We are just exploring to see if it makes any sense to sell the landfill to Los Angeles County,” said Councilman Bob Henderson. “If we think it does, then all five members of the council agree we will hold public hearings.”

A new operator would not mean more trash or truck traffic, city officials say. Because the 132-acre landfill is surrounded by protected parklands, its size is fixed. Even if there is a new owner, said Henderson, state permits require that the landfill be operated the same way it is currently run.
