Learn Who the Home Team Is

* The Aug. 23 article, “Roots-Based Rooting,” tells about the mixed loyalty of some Mexican Americans concerning the outcome of the Little League World Series.

My father immigrated to America from the Ukraine around the turn of the century. Once he set foot on Ellis Island, he never looked back and never left American soil, for fear that someone from the Tsarist regime would force him to leave his newly adopted homeland.

During the war, Americans of German descent had absolutely no hesitation as to whose side they were on. Not one Japanese American was ever convicted of conspiring with the enemy. Italian Americans fought and were killed or wounded in Italy.

I would hate to think what would happen if we ever went to war with Mexico. America is a nation of immigrants, but I have never until lately heard of such mixed loyalty to one’s native country or, as the article states so clearly, a preference of one’s native country over their adopted home.

Legal immigration is important for the continued growth of America, and I welcome all who wish to enter under our rules of eligibility. One of those rules is the pledge of allegiance to the United States. If one cannot truly accept that pledge, he need not enter.
