Coming soon to a city near (some) of you: the world’s tallest sand sculpture. At least, that’s what Gerry Kirk of Solana Beach, co-holder of the current Guinness record, and other sculptors from 18 countries hope to construct on Fiesta Island in San Diego’s Mission Bay.

The castle, begun Aug. 14 and titled “Lost City of Atlantis,” is due to be finished Thursday as the centerpiece of a nearly monthlong first annual San Diego International SandFest. There will be food courts, crafts booths, lessons in sandcastle building and entertainment. The site will be open daily 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sept. 30, spokeswoman Jackie Evers said.

One-day tickets to the site will cost $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and the military, and be free for children 6 and under. They can be bought on site or ordered in advance through Ticketmaster (tel. [619] 220-TIXS). Information: tel. toll-free (888) 310-7263.

Kirk and crew hope to build a castle more than 60 feet tall and 480 feet wide--breaking the height record of 56 feet, 2 inches set in 1989 in Kaseda, Japan.
