Low-cost federal flood insurance is now available to local residents.

With the recent adoption of city ordinances aimed at reducing flood losses, Laguna Hills has qualified for the National Flood Insurance Program, City Engineer Ken Rosenfield said.

The plan was enacted to help communities that are taking steps to prevent major disasters.

Homeowners can buy up to $250,000 of home insurance and $100,000 for contents. Renters can also cover their possessions in the program. Commercial property owners can buy up to $500,000 in coverage.

About 18,000 communities nationwide participate in the program. For information, call a flood insurance underwriter or contact the program toll-free at (888) CALLFLOOD.
