City May Hire Firm to Develop Railroad Plan

The City Council tonight will consider hiring a company for $54,000 to help develop a plan to lower railroad tracks along Orangethorpe Avenue.

County transportation and railroad officials have been studying ways to deal with increased traffic delays as a result of more rail traffic through four North County cities. The study is recommending about $200 million worth of grade separations, street extensions and closures. Lowering the railroad track was evaluated, but the cost is estimated at more than $400 million.

Placentia officials have said they support lowering the track, saying it would reduce rail noise, improve safety, and result in the least impact.

The consulting firm, Management Facilitators Inc. of Bermuda Dunes, would focus its work on a plan to lower the track as the best possible option, city officials said.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 401 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 993-8231.
