Recycling Center Near Supermarket to Be Shut

Citing noise and other problems, the City Council has agreed to shut down a recycling center behind a Ralphs supermarket on La Palma Avenue.

With the move, officials say, the city will become the first in the county without a recycling center that offers residents some compensation for their bottles, cans and plastic.

In casting his vote, Councilman Kenneth Blake said residents will still be able to find similar centers offering compensation within a short drive.

The council took action after receiving complaints from residents and businesses about noise, loitering, and litter created by the Mobile Recycling Corp. site.

Council members also said the Stanton-based company lacked a valid city business license.

Company officials called the problem with the license an “oversight” and said they would be willing to move the recycling bins as they’ve done in the past in response to complaints.

In other business, the council elected Charlene Hatakeyama, 51, as mayor. The council reorganizes annually.
