Panel Recommends Design for Veterans Memorial
The final rendering of a proposed veterans memorial has been put on display in the lobby of Santa Monica City Hall.
The memorial will replace another structure that was erected in 1967 but removed in 1988 during construction of the Third Street Promenade, said Santa Monica Beach Manager Judith Meister.
After months of public hearings and input from veterans, the Recreation and Parks Commission recommended one of three sketches that would place the memorial in Pacific Palisades Park near Arizona Street.
The structure will consist of six earth-tone granite columns--five for each branch of the armed forces and one dedicating the monument--that align with the setting sun on Veterans Day.
The text from the original monument will be changed so that it honors living and deceased veterans and mentions female and male veterans, Meister said.
