Janice Elaine Hancock, a native of Port Hueneme and a clerk at the post office there, died Monday. She was 35.

Hancock was born Jan. 15, 1962. She attended Hueneme High and then went to work for Security Pacific Bank in Oxnard, where she stayed for eight years. For the past eight years, she worked as a window clerk for the Postal Service.

“Janice loved people and was as unselfish a person you’d ever find,” said her husband, Barry, who retired in 1994 as the postmaster of Port Hueneme.

“Her customers at the bank and post office loved her,” Barry said. “She had a very pleasing personality and was always happy to see you.”

The couple married in Maui, Hawaii, on Sept. 23, 1993. Her husband said Hancock loved to fish and recalls that during their 10-day honeymoon in Maui, she caught a 23-pound mahi-mahi while on a deep-sea fishing trip.

Hancock also loved animals, said her husband.

“Janice would hand-feed miniature marshmallows to the raccoons,” he said. “Two blue jays that she named Birdie and Gertie were soon sitting on her hand and eating peanuts.”

In addition to her husband, Hancock is survived by three children, Ricky, 17, Jason, 14, and Michelle, 12.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Conrad-Carroll Mortuary, Oxnard.
