Golden West Beats San Joaquin Delta in Volleyball

Golden West, four-time defending state champions, opened state women’s volleyball tournament play with an easy win over San Joaquin Delta, 15-4, 15-6, 15-6, at Concordia University Friday night.

Mariah Marquis had 14 kills and 13 digs for Golden West (24-1), which faces Sacramento City today at 12 p.m. at Concordia.

San Joaquin Delta (18-1) was led by Marion Champion, who had eight kills.

Cabrillo 3, Saddleback 1--After dropping the first two games, 12-15, 9-15, the Gauchos came back to win the third game, 15-12, but were unable to keep the momentum. They lost the fourth game, 8-15.

In the Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament:

Long Beach City 63, Irvine Valley 60--Kevin Blunt scored a game-high 20 points to help lift Long Beach City (5-3) to the finals Saturday at 7 p.m. against Orange Coast. Josh Newburn had 11 points and seven rebounds. Kenny Washington scored 10 points.

In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 82, Taft 59--Jennifer Ludwicki scored 37 points to propel Orange Coast into the championship game. The Pirates (7-2) play the winner of Cuesta-Alan Hancock.

In the College of the Sequoias girls’ basketball tournament:

Fullerton 88, Canyons 73--Lauren Murphy scored 26 points as Fullerton advanced to today’s semifinals. Teammate Angie Baca scored 22 points for the Hornets (6-2).
