Marathon Runner

When is a so-called “winning marathon runner” a loser? I’ll tell you: when Chuck Teixeira, winner of the Santa Clarita Marathon, knocked a girl down while running in the race and left her lying in the street while he got up and kept on running (“Teixeira Overruns Competition, Onlooker,” Nov. 10).

His direct quote is: “I could hear her screaming behind me. I just mowed her right over.”

Apparently winning a race to this man is more important than a child’s life--after all, he did not know to what extent this girl was injured when he got up and kept on running.

The 10-year-old girl in this incident is my granddaughter. She is precious to me, and besides all the hurt that she has suffered, it really hurts me to see the praise and honor that was given to Teixeira as the “winner” of the Santa Clarita Marathon, when in my opinion, he is a loser--a big loser.
