Golden West Advances at Volleyball Tournament
Golden West defeated Cabrillo, 15-5, 15-4, 15-4, Saturday to advance to the finals of the state women’s volleyball tournament. The Rustlers (26-1), one victory from their sixth consecutive state title, play the winner of the losers’ bracket final at 5 p.m. today.
El Camino plays Santa Rosa at 10 a.m., and the winner moves on to play Cabrillo at 1 p.m. to determine Golden West’s opponent.
Earlier, the Rustlers defeated Sacramento City in the quarterfinals, 15-5, 15-6, 15-6. Golden West’s Kristin Smith had seven kills and 17 digs against the Panthers (17-6).
In the finals of the Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament:
Orange Coast 85, Long Beach 75--Shaun Jackson scored 32 points, including four of eight three-point attempts, to lead Orange Coast to the victory over Long Beach in the finals.
Jackson was named the tournament MVP. Pirates’ (6-3) guard Randall Shepard contributed 17 points and five assists in the victory. Josh Newburn scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Vikings (5-4).
In other Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament games:
Irvine Valley 61, El Camino 55--Donald Williams scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Irvine Valley in its victory over El Camino for third place.
In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:
Orange Coast 74, Cuesta 62--Jennifer Ludwicki scored 34 points as Orange Coast won the Cuesta tournament championship. Ludwicki also had 10 rebounds and five assists.
