San Fernando Dodges a Bullet and Wins Title

Josh Speaks missed a three-point shot at the buzzer and Antelope Valley High fell to San Fernando, 71-69, in overtime of the championship game of the Saugus tournament Saturday night.

Devon Montgomery, most valuable player in the tournament, sank a free throw to give San Fernando (5-0) a 70-69 lead with 1:05 left in overtime.

The Tigers (5-0) held Antelope Valley (3-2) scoreless the rest of the game.

“Credit our defense with the win,” San Fernando Coach Mick Cady said. “They made two key stops at the end that were just huge.”

Luis De La Rosa scored 17 points for San Fernando, including a free throw with 29 seconds left. Mike Page added 16 for the Tigers.

Antelope Valley (3-2) lost the game at the foul line, making only 19 of 41 free throws. San Fernando made 14 of 22.

“We have no one to blame but ourselves,” Antelope Valley Coach Tom Mahan said. “There’s no excuse for missing 22 free throws.”

Jourmaine Prater and Speaks, an all-tournament selection, each scored 17 points for the Antelopes, who had a 36-35 halftime lead despite being outscored in the second quarter, 24-15.

La Canada 56, Saugus 50--All-tournament selection Matt Moore scored 17 points and Ian Sullivan added 12 for the Spartans (4-1) in the third-place game.

Matt Bradley and Colin O’Hara each scored 13 points for Saugus (2-2). Nic Echevestre added 10 for Saugus.

La Canada took a 23-10 lead, but was outscored in each of the last three quarters.

Valencia 62, Oxnard 56--Jerrohn Jordan and Matt Pawlak each scored 17 points for the Vikings (5-1) in the fifth-place game.

Fabian Leon and Eskias McDaniels each added 11 for Valencia, which outscored Oxnard, 19-8, in the third quarter to rally from a 33-27 halftime deficit and take a 46-41 lead.

Damian Tafoya scored 18 points for Oxnard (2-2). Jeff Fouchey added 11 points and seven assists for the Yellowjackets.

Alemany 51, Saugus JV 47--Brett Bell scored 12 points for the Indians (2-3) in the seventh-place game.

The Centurion JV team, which was playing in place of Bakersfield Stockdale, which did not make the trip for the game because of inclement weather.

Mike Murray and Jason Addcox each added eight points for Alemany.

Jerome Edwards scored 13 points for Saugus.

Quartz Hill 68, Canyon 65--Chris Hebert scored 26 points for the Rebels (3-2), who opened the fourth quarter with a 24-9 run and took ninth place.

Russell Garcia had 14 points and Mario Grimm added 13 for Quartz Hill.

Justin Orefice scored the Cowboys’ first 13 points and finished with 17 points, seven assists and six steals.

Mike Reardon added 16 points for Canyon (2-3), including four three-point baskets, but missed a three-point shot with three seconds left in the game.

Highland 65, La Canada B--Frank Jimenez had 11 points and six assists for the Bulldogs (1-4) in the 11th-place game.

Dawon Lane had 10 points for Highland, which outscored La Canada, 24-6, in the second quarter.

John May had 16 points and five steals for the Spartans (0-4).
