Pierce College’s Adaptive Ski School, which teaches disabled people to ski, has announced dates for this season’s one-day trips.

Since its inception in 1974, the school has successfully taught the winter sport to people with various disabilities by providing them with specialized instruction, said Lynne Haile, founder and director of the school.

“We serve the blind, the deaf, amputees, paraplegics, those with polio and other disabilities,” Haile said.

On selected Fridays, Haile and volunteer ski instructors will escort a group of 10 disabled and 10 able-bodied skiers on bus trips to Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood.

The trips have been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16 and 30, Feb. 6 and 20, snow conditions permitting.

Those interested should make bus reservations prior to the trip by calling (818) 591-2228 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Disabled skiers should contact Haile so that adaptive equipment and specialized ski instructors can be matched according to individual needs.

Cost is $45 for the beginner ski package, which includes equipment, lessons and beginner lift tickets. Other ski packages are available.
